Transitioning Your Makeup From Summer To Fall: 7 Easy Changes That Make A Big Difference

There is something about September that feels like a reset.

The mornings get cooler, the humidity starts to disappear, our wardrobes begin to change—and suddenly the makeup routine that worked perfectly all summer doesn't feel quite right anymore.

Maybe your foundation is looking a little drier. Your summer bronzer feels too warm. Or the barely-there makeup you wore through July and August suddenly needs a little more polish.

You don't need to replace your entire makeup bag for fall.

In fact, transitioning your makeup from summer to fall is usually about making a few small changes to your texture, colour and hydration.

Here are seven easy ways to update your makeup for fall while keeping your routine simple.

Why Does Your Makeup Need To Change In The Fall?

Your makeup doesn't necessarily need to change because the calendar says September.

Your skin, however, often does.

Summer usually means heat, humidity, more sun exposure and increased oil production. As temperatures begin to cool and indoor heating eventually comes back on, many people notice their skin becoming:

  • Drier

  • Less oily

  • Slightly duller

  • More dehydrated

  • More sensitive

If you're over 40, these changes can become even more noticeable as our skin naturally produces less oil with age.

That's why a foundation or powder that looked beautiful in July may suddenly look different in October.

Before replacing your makeup, look at what your skin needs.

1. Bring Hydration Back Into Your Routine

This is the first thing I change when the seasons begin to shift.

During a hot, humid summer, you may have wanted as little as possible sitting on your skin. Once the air becomes cooler and drier, hydration becomes increasingly important.

Well-hydrated skin helps foundation blend more smoothly and can prevent makeup from emphasizing dry patches and texture.

Before applying makeup:

  • Start with clean skin.

  • Apply your hydrating skincare.

  • Give it a few minutes to absorb.

  • Then apply your makeup in lightweight layers.

And remember: hydrated skin and oily skin aren't opposites.

Even combination or oily skin can become dehydrated when the weather changes.

2. Recheck Your Foundation Shade

One of the easiest fall makeup mistakes to make is continuing to wear your summer foundation shade.

Even if you were diligent about SPF, most of us pick up at least a little additional colour during the summer months.

By fall, that colour gradually begins to fade.

Suddenly the foundation that looked perfect in August can start looking slightly too dark or too warm.

Check your foundation along your jawline in natural daylight.

Your foundation should disappear naturally into your neck rather than creating an obvious line between your face and body.

And don't use a darker foundation to hold onto your summer glow.

Foundation should match your skin.

We can add warmth back afterwards.

3. Swap Heavy Bronzing For Strategic Colour

Summer and bronzer seem to belong together.

But as we move into fall, I tend to pull back on an all-over bronzed look and bring more colour into the cheeks instead.

Blush instantly makes the complexion look healthy and awake, which can be especially helpful as our natural summer colour begins to disappear.

For fall, I love:

  • Soft peach

  • Dusty rose

  • Warm pink

  • Muted coral

  • Terracotta

The placement matters too.

Instead of concentrating blush heavily on the apples of the cheeks, try applying it slightly higher and blending outward toward the temples.

It creates colour while subtly lifting the face.

4. Add Glow—Don't Add More Makeup

As our summer glow begins to fade, the instinct can be to add more foundation.

Usually, that's not what the skin needs.

It needs dimension.

A small amount of highlighter on the high points of the face can bring light back into the complexion without adding another heavy layer of makeup.

Try applying a subtle highlight:

  • To the tops of the cheekbones

  • Beneath the brow bone

  • At the inner corners of the eyes

  • Very lightly along the bridge of the nose

The goal isn't sparkle.

It's creating the appearance of healthy, naturally luminous skin.

Especially after 40, strategic light can often do more for the complexion than additional coverage.

5. Give Your Lips More Hydration

If your lips suddenly start feeling drier when the weather changes, you're definitely not imagining it.

Cooler temperatures, wind and eventually indoor heating can all contribute to moisture loss.

Instead of jumping straight from summer gloss to a heavy matte fall lipstick, concentrate on keeping your lips comfortable.

I love tinted lip balms for this time of year because you get hydration and colour in one step.

Fall is also the perfect time to move toward slightly richer shades such as:

  • Dusty rose

  • Warm berry

  • Soft plum

  • Rosewood

  • Muted pink

You still get that fall feeling without committing to a dark, heavy lip.

And if your lips are flaky, gently exfoliate them before applying colour rather than layering lipstick over dry skin.

6. Soften Your Eye Makeup

Fall doesn't automatically mean dark eyeshadow.

In fact, I often think softer eye makeup looks more modern—especially on mature eyes.

Instead of heavy black liner and very dark shadows, try bringing in warm, muted tones like:

  • Taupe

  • Bronze

  • Soft brown

  • Champagne

  • Warm beige

Keep deeper colour closer to the lash line and blend everything well.

Then finish with mascara to define and open the eyes.

If black mascara feels too strong with a softer fall look, brown mascara can create beautiful definition without as much contrast.

The idea is to create warmth and depth without making the eyes feel heavy.

7. Use Less Powder

This may be the most important fall makeup change for anyone with dry or mature skin.

Powder is incredibly useful during hot, humid weather when you're trying to control excess shine.

But once humidity drops, the same amount of powder can suddenly make your complexion look dry, flat or textured.

You don't necessarily need to stop using powder.

Just become more strategic with it.

Instead of powdering your entire face, concentrate on areas where makeup tends to move or where you naturally become shiny—often around the nose, forehead and chin.

Let the rest of your skin maintain some natural luminosity.

Healthy skin isn't completely matte.

Common Fall Makeup Mistakes

Seasonal makeup doesn't require an entirely new beauty routine, but there are a few mistakes I see frequently:

  • Continuing to use a foundation shade that's become too dark

  • Applying more foundation when skin actually needs hydration

  • Using the same amount of powder you used during humid weather

  • Switching immediately to very dark lipstick

  • Overusing bronzer to recreate a summer tan

  • Assuming fall makeup has to be heavier

  • Forgetting that skincare needs can change with the weather

The biggest mistake?

Adding more when your skin is asking for something different.

A Simple 5-Minute Fall Makeup Routine

You absolutely don't need ten products to transition your makeup for fall.

Here's an uncomplicated everyday routine:

Step 1: Prep your skin with hydration and allow it to absorb.

Step 2: Apply lightweight foundation only where you need to even out your complexion.

Step 3: Add a soft peach, rose or warm pink blush slightly higher on the cheeks.

Step 4: Define your lashes with mascara.

Step 5: Finish with a hydrating lip colour and a touch of highlighter where you want extra glow.

Five steps.

Fresh skin.

A little colour.

Done.

POV

After more than 20 years in beauty, one thing I've learned is that our makeup routines shouldn't stay exactly the same all year.

Our skin doesn't.

The weather changes. Our skin changes. Our colouring changes.

And as we get older, we often notice those shifts more quickly than we did before.

But that doesn't mean every new season requires a trip to the beauty counter.

I actually believe the opposite.

Before adding another product, look at what you already own and ask how you can use it differently.

Maybe you need less powder.

Maybe your blush needs to move slightly higher.

Maybe it's time to switch foundation shades.

Or maybe your skin simply needs more hydration underneath everything.

That's what Uncomplicated Beauty has always meant to me.

Understanding what you need—and skipping what you don't.

The da lish Fall Edit

Duo Blush Compacts

Fall is the perfect time to bring colour back into the complexion.

Peachy Keen combines soft peach and pink coral, while Rose All Day gives you punchy pink and terracotta coral. You can wear one shade or blend the two together depending on the look you want.

da lish Foundation

Keep your complexion lightweight and natural rather than increasing coverage as summer ends. Apply where you need it and build only where necessary.

Tinted Lip Balms

An easy fall transition because they combine comfortable hydration with wearable colour. Dusty rose and berry tones add seasonal depth without the heaviness of a traditional dark fall lip.

Sunrise & Sunset Highlighters

As your summer glow begins to fade, a small amount of strategically placed highlighter brings dimension and luminosity back to the complexion.

Black Mascara

Sometimes defining the lashes is all you need to make the eyes look polished. Keep the rest of the eye soft and let your lashes provide the definition.

Your Fall Makeup Checklist

Before buying anything new for fall, check what you already have.

Ask yourself:

  • Does my foundation still match my skin?

  • Does my skin need more hydration?

  • Am I using more powder than I need?

  • Could I replace some bronzer with blush?

  • Are my lips feeling drier?

  • Could my eye makeup be softer?

  • Am I adding makeup when what I actually need is better skin preparation?

Your answers will tell you far more than any seasonal trend report.

Final Thoughts

Transitioning your makeup from summer to fall doesn't require an entirely new makeup bag.

A little more hydration, a fresh foundation check, warmer cheek and lip colours, softer eyes and less powder may be all you need.

The best seasonal makeup isn't about following every fall trend.

It's about noticing what has changed—your skin, the weather and the way your makeup is wearing—and adjusting accordingly.

Keep the skin fresh.

Bring back a little colour.

Add light where you need it.

And most importantly, keep it simple.

Because beautiful makeup should work with your skin in every season—not fight against it.
